STRmix™ is designed to run on an individual DNA analyst’s PC (either standalone or in a networked environment), without the need for high speed computing.

1 will run most 1, 2, 3, and 4 person mixtures, may also run some 5 person mixtures.

2 will run most 1, 2, 3, and 4 person mixtures, and some 5 person mixtures.

3 will run most 1,2,3,4, and 5 person mixtures (including with replicates) and some 6 person mixtures.

4 due to parallelisation, best performance is achieved with high performance threads[1]. For running the default 8 chains in STRmix™, each chain would ideally have a dedicated thread. Many CPUs are "hyper-threaded", providing two threads per core.

5 this is the space required for the application itself and does not include the space required for results of STRmix™ runs.

[1]A useful resource for checking a CPU model is available at www.cpubenchmark.net/single-thread/(external link). A single thread rating of 3000 or more is traditionally considered "high performance", though CPU performance continues to improve.

Software

Operating System:  Windows 11 64-bit recommended.

STRmix™ is not supported by a MacOS environment.

To determine detailed information about your system:

Select Run from the Windows Search bar or by right clicking on the Windows Start button.  Enter MSINFO32.EXE and select OK.

Locate your Operating System under ‘OS Name’ and the type of system under ‘System Type’.

Locate your processor type under ‘Processor’ and the amount of memory under ‘Installed Physical Memory (RAM)’.  Close MSINFO.

Open My Computer.  Locate the drive on which to install STRmix™. Right Click the drive and select Properties. Ensure that there is a least 300MB free on the drive.
